Having undergone intense renovation works, the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport now receives passengers and other users in the greatest of comfort, taking up the role of primary travel hub for the north-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula.
The new terminal no longer operates on a single floor. For comfort and operational reasons, the design provided for an expansion in height, so that arrivals and departures can now take place on different levels, a measure that facilitates the terminal’s expansion. Large commercial and leisure areas and other passenger facilities have been installed on a mezzanine floor. The Terminal’s architecture confers on the airport the status of a modern and functional airport.
The public and check-in areas were enlarged aiming at a significantly increasing capacity. In this phase, approximately 60 check-in counters have been installed, leaving room for an increase to 120 counters within the framework of a future expansion.
New baggage terminals were also in the planning. The baggage handling system has been completely refurbished, fully automated and equipped to scan the entire checked luggage. The enlargement includes a pier that, along with a thorough remodelling of the apron allows, in this phase, for boarding and deplaning to be performed through 9 passenger contact gates.
A recent study presented by ACI (Airport Council International), an organization that represents the interests of Airports worldwide, based on the passenger's opinion, has distinguished the Porto Airport as the best of Europe both by international and domestics passengers.
The majority of the World best Airports are represented in this benchmarking.

The city of Porto has recently developed a new way of transportation, the light urban metro network that provides both citizens and visitors a comfortable and faster way of transportation.
The Blue and Red lines are already operating from Matosinhos and Póvoa to the new F.C. Porto Stadium, the Dragon Stadium. The interface that connects the Red Line and downtown with Porto International Airport opened in June 2006.
Rates vary according to the different zones. Generally speaking a journey can cost between €0,80 and €1,00. A first time traveller has to buy the "andante" card - a magnetic rechargeable ticket that can be used both in the metro network and several bus lines.
A network of buses covers the city and fares are paid upon entering the bus. There are special cards for 1 day or cards for 10 journeys. Original tramcars offer nostalgic tours along the riverfront, ocean promenade and Historic Centre.
Normally take up to four passengers.
Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt
French and English speaking guides/drivers; Limousines take up to 7 passengers.
